Helping Preschoolers Express Their Emotions: Why We Wrote “Better Out Than In”

Farts always get preschoolers laughing, which makes them a surprisingly good way to start an important conversation about feelings.

We created Better Out Than In to help children understand that emotions are natural, normal and something everyone experiences. Just like a fart, holding a feeling in doesn’t make it disappear. It can become uncomfortable and eventually come out in ways we didn’t intend. Every feeling belongs

Children experience big emotions, but they may not always have the words to explain them. Our song reminds them that feeling angry, sad, worried, or overwhelmed does not make them “too much.”

Every feeling is valid, but how we express it matters.

Sometimes children need a moment of quiet before they are ready to share. They can pause, process what they are feeling and then find a safe way to let it out. That might mean:

  • Talking to someone they trust

  • Drawing or writing about it

  • Having a good cry

  • Moving, dancing or taking a walk

The goal isn’t to make difficult feelings disappear. It’s to help children recognise them, express them safely and allow them to pass. Turning a big lesson into something children understand

“Better Out Than In” uses music, humour and a little silliness to make emotional expression easier for young children to understand, and easier for families to talk about together.

Listen to the song with your child, have a laugh, and use it to begin a simple conversation: “What feeling have you been carrying lately?”
